In movies/shows/books, the character that's supposed to be intelligent is almost always wearing glasses, and the people wearing glasses are almost always with a higher than average intelligence. Why is this?
It's not as if having bad eyesight (the reason you'd have to wear them) makes you brilliant or something. It's pretty much a stereotype that most of us buy into anyway; we usually tend to assume that a person in real life with glasses is a "smart person" unless it's very obvious they're an idiot (probably the case with me). And if an actor/actress that doesn't normally wear glasses suddenly puts them on, it somehow makes their character seem like a genius instead of average?
I just thought of something: Maybe in the old days, a person that was an intellectual would read a lot, and they had glasses to see words better, and somehow the two became associated? I don't know, give me an explanation. |

I don't know why but this seems true in my family. None of my parents, aunts, uncles have glasses and they were C students in school. Now my cousins and myself all have glasses and are either in high school, college, or graduated from college. And out of all my cousins, I'm the dumb one with only a 4.0 GPA. I have a cousin that will be going to Yale next year, I have a cousin that did great in college and is now a nurse, and a few more cousins in high school that are in the top 20 of their class. _________________ This message was brought to you by:

to add to my previous comment,
I figured it out, you know how they say computer screens supposedly damage your eyesight? Well, nerds and geeks have a stereotype of sitting in front of a computer all day long (not doing anything COOL either), and then so, needing glasses to be able to compensate for the vision loss.
Other things:
POCKET PROTECTORS - They carry pens in their shirt pocket, and because of the fact they all the time get punched, they wanna keep their pockets from getting stained.
SUSPENDERS - They gotta keep from getting pantsed (aka, someone running up behind you and pulling your pants down)
TAPE ON THE GLASSES - Too cheap too get good glasses or get them fixed.
HAIR GEL - don't know. |

Yeah, suspenders would help someone in a pantsing situation; I never thought of that.
What about bow ties? |

I Googled "bow tie" and found a Wikipedia page on it. Apparently architects are supposed to wear them often because they don't dangle like a necktie when drawing. |

That makes sense, I mean, it's like long hair. Long hair fits with rockers cause they look cool, but someone like an architect or a preacher or some other "normal" profession wouldn't look that good. |
