It may be pretty late, as everyone has probably moved on PS3, or Xbox360 by now, but here is something I recently discovered that allows you to play burnt/ripped/copied PS2 games, without the need of modifying your PS2 unit by taking it apart and soldiering in new chips etc... hence, not avoiding any warranties.
Memor32 Memory Card
http://www.ozmodchips.com/plug-and-play-ps2-modchip-memor32-alternative-p-208.html
All you need to do is purchase this memory card that has a program called Free McBoot already installed on it.
That site's link is for Australia, the company is located in Melbourne, and is for PAL PS2's only. If you want NTSC (America, Canada etc) then please use google to find a seller. Or try the official website of Memor32 @
http://www.memor32.com/
All you need to do is purchase the card, which is half of what modding your system would cost. And plug it into your PS2 memory card.
Now, to copy games. You will need to get a program called "ImgBurn" which can both copy a PS2 DVD, or write an ISO file that you already have downloaded.
However, unlike burning other PS2 games, for the Memor32 you will need to patch your ISO files. A simple process that takes about 2 seconds. On the link above to OzModChips you will see a link to download the ESR Patcher. Do so.
Once you have patched the game, you can use ImgBurn to write it to a DVD and then you just stick it in your PS2, a screen comes up with an option, just ignore it and hit X, you screen may turn a few colors, and then your game should begin if everything has been done correctly.
Note: This does not work with CD's, only DVD's. however there is a simple way of converting any PS2 Cd's to DVD format by using a program called Ultra ISO, where you just open your ISO file, select properties, change your disc to 4.7 DVD output, and tick the UDF button, and copy it back to your hardrive as a DVD format PS2 game.... remember to patch it after that.
This will not allow you to play ripped PS1 games, and don't be fucking stupid and think it will do PS3 either.... nor will this game break region codings on official PS2 games... but yes, ripped games are fine of any region.
P.P.S: Yes, the memory card is a memory card too. _________________
